SUMMARY

Extensive cultural knowledge is not necessary in order to become culturally aware. A capacity to recognise that cultural difference exist, and to be open to learning from these differences is the bases of cultural awareness.

This coaching program is designed to expand thinking and understanding about the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community, its history and contemporary issues; and to facilitate understanding between staff and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.

You will be provided with historical legislative and policy development information, as it pertains to Australian Indigenous peoples, to increase understanding of how history relates to current Indigenous Australian socio economic status and behaviours.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT

Over this two part series you will hear Jodi Sampson’s personal narrative and insight into people from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander background within the workplace, customer base and community.

Session one:  Friday 16 July 2021 at 2.00pm AEST

  • Information required to better support Indigenous clients and community
  • Knowledge and understanding of the cultural and social history of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and the issues they face

Session two: Friday 23 July 2021 at 2.00pm AEST

  • Knowledge, skills and tools required for effective communication and service delivery to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

We are pleased to announce our second Masterclass for the year as part of our on-line international innovation tour.

This Masterclass will focus on experiences of European Public Employment Services in providing high quality services to their most disadvantaged and vulnerable clients in an era of rapid digitilisation (please see below for the overview from our European colleagues) and will be facilitated by Employment Policy Consultant, Miguel Peromingo.

"This masterclass presents and discusses successful approaches and recent adjustments of PES in the European Union in how to guarantee that none of their clients is left behind."

OVERVIEW

“The Covid-19 pandemic has undoubtedly accelerated the use of digital tools in the labour market and, in many ways, empowered some job-seekers to own their career decisions more, for example by being more involved in job search or decisions on their upskilling. On the other side, growing unemployment/underemployment and persistent lack of digital skills and access has pushed those that were already far from the labour market before the crisis further into low employability and the struggle with multiple barriers such as social and economic challenges, physical and mental health conditions, and impacts of long-term unemployment including lowered self-esteem.

Employment services all over the world face tough decisions on how to service their most vulnerable clients while their service infrastructure for face-to-face contacts is being dismantled in favour of more digital access. Hybrid models are a walkable path, but only if they are paired with client-focused case management and a clear nod towards digital skills training.

This masterclass presents and discusses successful approaches and recent adjustments of PES in the European Union in how to guarantee that none of their clients is left behind.”

Mr. Miguel Peromingo

Miguel Peromingo is a freelance consultant on global labour markets and employment services. His work focuses on the future of work, delivery models of public employment services (PES) and change management in public institutions.

Karin Johansson is Senior Officer at Arbetsförmedlingen, the Swedish Public Employment Service. She has an educational background as occupational therapist and is responsible for strengthening and developing national support within work-oriented rehabilitation for jobseekers with different health barriers.

Switzerland

Dorit Griga is Senior Manager of the International Relations at the Swiss State Secretariat for Economy, which operates as national PES coordinator. She is a social scientist with many years of experience in carrying out projects and studies in the field of education and labour market policy.

Davide Li Cavoli is the project manager for the current digitization of the Unemployment Insurance in Switzerland. He has 15 years of experience in project and project portfolio management as well as in the area of web portals in the automotive sector, public authorities and real estate.

Ashley Wareing works for the benchmark department of the HQ of Pôle employ, the French PES. Ashley has developed a wide range of projects in international benchmarking, strategy, services to jobseekers and businesses, partnerships, digitalization, training, career guidance, vulnerable groups and labour market analysis.

NESM and Enhanced Services: Preparing For Your Proposal 2 Workshop

Join NESA's Senior Policy Advisor Damien Opolski online as he hosts and facilitates the 5 part NESM and Enhanced Services: Preparing For Your Proposal 2 workshop. In the fifth module, Damien will be joined by NESA’s Principal Policy Advisor Annette Gill as the topic expert to look at and discuss the selection criteria.

In May this year we ran a very successful three-part series called ‘NESM – Preparing For Your Proposal’. The series looked at the proposed licencing and payments models, as well as giving newer people an insight into the evolution of Australia’s employment services and the current landscape. We also looked at how the Department of Education, Skills and Employment (DESE) have traditionally monitored performance and some key tips around responding to DESE procurement exercises.

This Preparing For Your Proposal 2 workshop builds on this. With the release of the Request for Proposal we now have a greater insight into what NESM Enhanced Services will look like ‘on the ground’.

Preparing For Your Proposal 2 workshop will be delivered on-line in five modules over five near consecutive days, starting Wednesday 15 September 2021. 

The workshop will be delivered by Damien Opolski with topic expert Annette Gill joining him in Module 5.

This will ensure you get information early and maximise the time available to complete your proposal. Modules 2 – 4 look at different aspects of the policy and will be of particular interest to newer people.

WITH THE RELEASE OF THE REQUEST FOR PROPOSAL WE NOW HAVE A GREATER INSIGHT INTO WHAT NESM ENHANCED SERVICES WILL LOOK LIKE ‘ON THE GROUND’.

Damien Opolski – Senior Policy Advisor – National Employment Services Association (NESA) – will be delivering modules 1 to 5.

Damien has over 35 years of experience and depth of skills in all facets of Australian employment services. Earlier in his career Damien spent a number of years on the ‘front line’ working in the former Commonwealth Employment Service (CES). Damien estimates he has conducted over 10,000 job seeker interviews and worked with hundreds of employers. While working with the Department of Employment as Director of the Learning Centre Damien managed development of the training platform, training strategies and materials to ensure the 20,000+ professionals engaged in the delivery of Australian employment services received training to undertake their role. As a Senior Policy Advisor with NESA, Damien continues to support member organisations navigate contract requirements, with a strong focus on IT and cyber security, as well as continuing to develop front line practice as a regular workshop presenter for NESA. Damien is an excellent communicator, who enjoys interacting and sharing his system expertise with his audience; and he has a Bachelor of Economics from Adelaide University, as well as Diplomas in Training and Assessment, and Project Management. He’s also a qualified Teacher of English to Speakers of Other Languages.

NESA Staff Annette Gill

Annette Gill – Principal Policy Advisor – National Employment Services Association (NESA) – will be our topic expert for module 5

Annette Gill is a consultant with a wealth of experience in social policy, government relations, competitive procurement and operational management. Following her studies in Applied Psychology, Annette’s diverse career has spanned human services with roles focused on homeless youth, substance users, disadvantaged families, people with disabilities, survivors of sexual assault and the unemployed. Annette has worked with not-for-profit, private and local government organisations and has been involved in State and Commonwealth funded employment services since the early 1990’s.

Annette was the General Manager of a successful employment service organisation and later came to NESA where she worked for 10 years as the Policy Manager. Prior to commencing her current consultancy business, Annette held the role of Policy and Research Manager of Karingal, a large community and disability services organisation with annual revenue of approximately $100 m and which was part of the NDIS Barwon trial. In this role, Annette led the policy and research agenda as well as undertaking bid management contributing to organisational growth, particularly in its aged care and employment services divisions.

When working with people from different walks of life on a daily basis, and often requesting them to undertake activities they may not be enthusiastic about, some level of challenging behaviour is inevitable. This is a two session on line coaching program designed to build skills in dealing effectively with challenging behaviour from an employment service industry perspective.
The coaching program aims to provide you with all the skills to help you understand and deal with the challenges of a modern-day client-centred employment service. Participants will acquire knowledge on how to enhance their communication techniques and to avoid conflict in the workplace. The model of delivery for this coaching program requires ‘learning by doing’, an active learning approach, whereby participants are expected to contribute to the discussion of techniques and to consider alternative and innovative approaches.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT

Session one: Self-management, resilience, and communication & listening skills: Friday 8 October 2021 at 12 noon AEDT.  

  • Understand the principles of how to self-manage and remain resilient in confronting situations.
  • How to maintain safe limits and set client expectations.
  • Understand how good communication can influence people.
  • Learn how to develop effective listening skills and assist clients to develop new skills in communication

The mere mention of the term ‘performance management’ is enough to send a shiver up the spine of new managers/team leaders and their staff. Many of us immediately think of nerve-wracking performance appraisals and sleepless nights prior to those underperformance discussions. It doesn’t have to be like this.

This 3-part coaching program introduces new team leaders, and those looking for new ideas or to benchmark, to some of the key elements of performance management. While Most providers will have extensive HR assistance and Performance Management Frameworks, this coaching program focuses on an inclusive outcome centred approach to addressing, rewarding or re-aligning staff performance.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT

Session 1 – Performance Management Framework? It’s much more than a Performance Agreement! – Wednesday 2 March 2022 at 2.00pm AEDT

In this session we’ll look at performance management and why it’s so important to the success of an organisation. Good performance management is like preventative medicine: people and organisations can thrive, and costs of solving staffing problems are reduced. What does good performance management look like? What does a good Performance Agreement look like? We’ll talk about it today.

We’ll also commence work on our coaching program project – to develop a Performance Agreement template for frontline staff.

Session 2 – Performance Appraisal and Managing Under Performance – Thursday 10 March 2022 at 2.00pm AEDT 

A good Performance Management Framework allows people and organisations to flourish. Performance Appraisal is an integral part of the ongoing performance management process. Most of us are good at good news. Sometimes, however, there will be performance issues that we need to address. In a few cases we may need to work through a more formal under performance management process. In today’s session we’ll look at the Performance Appraisal process and managing under performance.

Session 3 – Over to You…. – Tuesday 15 March 2022 at 2.00pm AEDT 

Over the last two weeks participants have been developing a Performance Agreement template for the ‘employment consultant role’. Today is ‘show and tell’ day! What performance indicators did you include in your template? How will you measure performance, and what will your evidence sources be?

SUMMARY

Extensive cultural knowledge is not necessary in order to become culturally aware. A capacity to recognise that cultural difference exist, and to be open to learning from these differences is the bases of cultural awareness.

This coaching program is designed to expand thinking and understanding about the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community, its history and contemporary issues; and to facilitate understanding between staff and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.

You will be provided with historical legislative and policy development information, as it pertains to Australian Indigenous peoples, to increase understanding of how history relates to current Indigenous Australian socio economic status and behaviours.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT

Over this two part series you will hear Jodi Sampson’s personal narrative and insight into people from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander background within the workplace, customer base and community.

Session one:  Tuesday 22 March 2022 at 3.00pm AEDT

  • Information required to better support Indigenous clients and community
  • Knowledge and understanding of the cultural and social history of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and the issues they face

Session two: Tuesday 29 March 2022 at 3.00pm AEDT

  • Knowledge, skills and tools required for effective communication and service delivery to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Expected outcomes

  • Awareness and knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural issues and how they relate to your business, your job seekers and your employer placement and retention.
  • A practical understanding of how culture shapes our values, attitudes and behaviour.
  • Tools for staff who mentor, manage and work with Indigenous job seekers.
  • Insight into people from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander background within the workplace, customer base and community

Jodi is a proud Gomeroi Man from North-West NSW. Jodi was raised in ‘Two-Worlds’ in Moree and has an entrepreneurial spirit that runs deep, provides leadership, Coaching & Mentoring and role models the cultural values of his family and ancestors.
Jodi’s career spans across all levels of Government, Non-Government, Peak Bodies and Community-Based Organisations. Jodi’s engagement has seen him hold specialised roles and conducted cutting-edge strategic activities to provide access and participation of First Nation People to programs & opportunities that seemed unreachable.

This webinar session will provide you with tools, AND risk management principles, that can assist you to respond to participant job fallouts.

Our trainer Rebecca Herbertson will explore the Post Placement Support (PPS) process, a preventative fallout PPS Plan, a Time Line of Support; identify potential weaknesses, and employer involvement, and explore how these can be communicated. Rebecca will finish up the session with an exciting Fallout Response Team strategy.

Rebecca Herbertson

Rebecca holds a Bachelor of Psychology, a Graduate Certificate in Career Development and other qualifications in Training, Management and Human Resources. With over fifteen years experience working in Employment Services and ten years delivering industry training, Rebecca is able to relay her knowledge and experience using a common sense approach and an informal manner which is popular with her clients.

Her Employment Services work has primarily involved facilitating the Certificate IV in Employment Services throughout Western Australia and assisting organisations with other business needs such as tender writing and policy development.

Currently the Director of Training and Compliance at the Betterlink Group, a Western Australian based RTO she is also a professional member of the Career Development Association of Australia, a Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and an internationally certified Continuous Improvement Coach, SME Executive Coach and NLP Practitioner.

This virtual and interactive, five by one hour modular master class program equips you and your team with a systematic approach to employer engagement.

You will learn to initiate and maintain stronger relationships with employers that build tenacity and optimism in your business.

We will work through an online, interactive presentation and comprehensive ‘how-to’ manual, including valuable strategies, tools, and exercises. Skills acquired are immediately deployable and regular debriefs on skill attainment occur throughout the modules.
