In a complicated and constantly changing industry, giving the right support to new staff is critical so they can hit the ground running and avoid feeling overwhelmed. Our DES 2018 Employment Consultant Induction series can help them feel comfortable and understand the industry context and framework that they are now working with. It will help you to retain staff and avoid having to go through the costly recruitment process again. Our aim is to assist them to settle in quickly and become productive as soon as they can. The series will also be useful for existing staff that need a refresher or are returning to work after a long absence (such as maternity or long service leave).
Our Employment Consultant Induction coaching programme has a focus on the DES 2018 core elements and the soft skills required for positive client engagement, job placement and effective post placement support. The sessions are full of observed good practices, tips and advice.
WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT
Over three on-line webinar sessions, Matt Eldridge will comprehensively introduce staff to the components and good practice soft skills that makes an effective and efficient employment services industry. The webinars will take participants through a range of strategies so they can perform effectively with customers, while touching on the KPI measures and compliance requirements. Our training is operational and complimentary to your internal induction programmes.
Each session is expected run for approximately an hour and a half. This live broadcast will include ample Q&A time. The model of delivery for this coaching programme requires learners to “learn by doing”, which is an active learning approach whereby learners will be given work-based activities to be completed as part of the series. Once the series has been completed you will be forward a Certificate of Completion for your portfolio.

Annette Gill
NESA Principal Policy Advisor
Annette has worked with not for profit, private and local government organisations and has been involved in State and Commonwealth funded employment services since the early 1990’s. Annette was Policy Manager at NESA from 2003 - 2013. Prior to commencing her current consultancy business, Annette held the role of Policy and Research Manager of Karingal a large community and disability services organisation with annual revenue of approximately $100 m and which was part of the NDIS Barwon trial. Annette led the policy and research agenda as well as undertaking bid management contributing to organisational growth, particularly in its aged care and employment services divisions.
Vanessa Puopolo
NESA Policy Advisor
Vanessa has worked in the employment services sector for over 9 years after completing a Bachelor of Applied Science (Disability) in 2007. In 2013 Vanessa joined the NESA policy team engaging with NESA members through outreach to identify operational and policy related issues across the breadth of all employment programmes including jobactive, DES, TTW and WfD, she is focused on being a voice and influence that helps shape employment programme settings to achieve operational efficiencies for staff whilst ensuring programmes tangibly meeting the needs of job seekers through effective and efficient services.

Managing Challenging and Aggressive Client Behaviour

When working with people from different walks of life on a daily basis, and often requesting them to undertake activities they may not be enthusiastic about, some level of challenging behaviour is inevitable. This is a two session online coaching programme designed to build skills in dealing effectively with challenging behaviour from an employment service industry perspective.
The coaching programme aims to provide you with all the skills to help you understand and deal with the challenges of a modern-day client-centred employment service. Participants will acquire knowledge on how to enhance their communication techniques and to avoid conflict in the workplace. Participants are expected to contribute to the discussion of techniques and to consider alternative and innovative approaches. The model of delivery for this coaching program requires “learning by doing”, an active learning approach in which learners will be given work-based activities to be completed as part of the series.
WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT
Session one : Self-management, resilience, and communication & listening skills. Session is being held on Thursday 19 July 2018 at 2pm AEST (1:30pm SA & NT, and 12 noon WA)

Motivating Resistant Clients

About
Resistant clients require a different level of investment to get them motivated and change their mindsets. This workshop takes a close look at why clients may be resistant, reluctant or suspicious. This 1-day workshop provides employment consultants and practitioners with the skills to positively engage mandated clients and develop workable relationships. It will enable practitioners to confidently deliver effective services and achieve outstanding & sustainable results. Focusing on client accountability, the skills learned will enable consultants to encourage clients to take personal responsibility whilst creating motivation. Instead of struggling when confronted by resistant clients, practitioners can adapt a more constructive method to achieving outcomes. Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a communication method intended to move a person toward change, focusing on exploring and resolving ambivalence as a key to eliciting that change. MI facilitates and engages intrinsic motivation within the client to change behaviour. The practitioner seeks to elicit “change talk” (participant initiating discussion about the idea of changing). A client’s readiness for change may be assessed and Motivational Interviewing provided to suit the clients stage of change. This one-day workshop has been designed to build a framework to engage and motivate resistant clients. The aim of the workshop is to provide staff with the skills to engage reluctant clients, utilising the Stages of Change Model and Motivational Interviewing skills to inspire motivation and enthusiasm.

As an expert in encouraging mandated and resistant clients to change, she keynotes at National Conferences on topics of Behavioural Change, AOD, Mental Health and Neuropsychotherapy.

The Hon Kelly O'Dwyer MP
Minister for Jobs, Industrial Relations and Women
Kelly was appointed as the Minister for Jobs and Industrial Relations in the Morrison Government in August 2018 in addition to her role as Minister for Women, which she was appointed to in December 2017.
She is a member of Cabinet and Cabinet’s Expenditure Review Committee (ERC).
In April 2017, Kelly became the first female Cabinet Minister to give birth whilst in office. She was also the first woman to sit in Cabinet in a Treasury portfolio.
Kelly O’Dwyer was elected to represent the people in Higgins in December 2009.

Terri is the Shadow Minister for Young Australians and Youth Affairs, the Shadow Minister for Employment Services, Workforce Participation and Future of Work, and the Member for Griffith. She has served in the parliament since 2014, when she was elected in a by-election after former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd left parliament.
As an MP, Terri co-founded the Parliamentary Friends of Innovation and Enterprise, co-chaired parliamentary friends groups for Tourism, the AFLW, and Meals on Wheels. She has previously served as a Shadow Parliamentary Secretary and Shadow Assistant Minister in the fields of domestic violence, universities, and equality. In the latter capacity she worked closely with the LGBTIQ community in relation to attaining marriage equality. Terri has also served on parliamentary committees for employment, education and training, corporations and financial services, social policy, and parliamentary procedure. In 2014, as a new backbencher, she led Labor’s cost of living committee.

Janine has held senior positions within the Employment, Education and Human Services portfolios with positons involving legislation and policy development, national procurement, national program management and delivery across a broad range of employment, training, skills and Indigenous-specific programs.
Janine was Minister-Counsellor (Employment) to the OECD in Paris and Australia’s representative to the International Labour Organisation. Prior to commencing in that role Janine was the NSW/ACT State Manager for the Commonwealth Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations. In this role she delivered programs and services from across the Education and Employment portfolio including employment, disability and remote employment services, early childhood education and care, Indigenous employment and economic development, youth, skills, labour market, industry and regional strategies.
Janine is currently the Group Manager of the Activation and Work for the Dole Group within the Commonwealth Department of Jobs and Small Business. She manages key program elements of the Government’s national employment services program, jobactive, along with job seeker activation, and participation.

Summary
Extensive cultural knowledge is not necessary in order to become culturally aware. A capacity to recognise that cultural difference exists, and to be open to learning from these differences is the basis of cultural awareness.
This coaching programme is designed to expand thinking and understanding about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, their history and contemporary issues, and to facilitate understanding between staff and Indigenous Australians.
You will be provided with historical legislative and policy development information as it pertains to Australian Indigenous peoples, to increase your understanding of how history relates to current Indigenous Australian socioeconomic status.
Over this two part series you will hear Nathan Frank’s personal narrative and insight into people from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander background within the workplace, customer base and community.
Each session is expected run for approximately an hour. This live broadcast will include ample Q&A time. Once the series has been completed you will be forward a Certificate of Completion for your portfolio. So it can be used as a future resource, people that register for the live broadcast will receive a PDF copy of the presentation.

FACILITATOR
Nathan Frank
Nathan Frank is a Wiradjuri man from Dubbo in Central West New South Wales who has over 10 years’ experience working in the not for profit sector. Nathan has worked in the fields of Indigenous Financial Literacy and Education, and is a member of the NESA Team as a Senior Remote Training Coordinator working on the Aboriginal Mental Health First Aid Project. With a comprehensive understanding of barriers faced by Indigenous Australians, Nathan has developed and delivered award-winning projects targeted at addressing their needs.
