WEBINAR

Tuesday 29 May 2018    |    2pm AEST (1:30pm in SA & NT and 12 noon in WA)

Target Group

All staff

Summary

Mental health problems are all too common in our communities, and we seek to avoid language that could trigger episodes or make matters worse. However, front line staff may come across situations where a client needs immediate assistance. The aim of this webinar is to provide you with information so you can feel comfortable about how you respond to a person with a mental health problem. Tune in and listen to Ian Mackie comprehensively discuss and answer your questions on responding to and supporting a person with a mental health condition within the employment services environment.

key elements

  • How social norms are formed
  • How to speak and interact to avoid triggering episodes or making matters worse
  • When something is not quite right
  • How do we conduct our business so that we avoid copycat behaviours
  • Referral and follow up
  • Helping yourself – building an affirming workplace culture

FACILITATOR

Ian Mackie

Ian has had a long and distinguished career in Queensland schools. He has worked across the state in teaching and principal roles. In the 1990’s he was President of the Teachers’ Union and went on to a long career as a very senior public servant. He served as the first Training Ombudsman returning to schools in 2005 to achieve national acclaim for the “job guarantee” methodology now used in many high schools around the country. He left the Public Service as an Assistant Director General in 2011 to pursue his interest in improving outcomes for Indigenous students. This has led to his intense study and research into the use of Nudge Theory in all schools. He is connected at highest levels of government and business.
